Anal Skin Tags: Symptoms, Diagnosis, Treatment and Cost
An anal skin tag is a fleshy growth of skin near the anus. They are typically benign and may be a result of other medical conditions. At Leicester Bowel Clinic, we can help diagnose and remove anal skin tags and treat any associated underlying conditions.
What is an Anal Skin Tag?
A skin tag is a fleshy growth of skin that is usually benign (not cancerous). When a skin tag is formed near the anus (where stool exits the body), it is called an anal skin tag.
Anal skin tags are harmless and usually not painful. Sometimes they may itch and cause some discomfort, depending on how many you have and their size. If they are small and not associated with significant symptoms, they may not need to be removed other than for cosmetic reasons. Patients might choose to opt for anal skin tag removal for various reasons, including hygiene improvement, better confidence, or cosmetic reasons.
What are the Symptoms of an Anal Skin Tag?
In most cases, anal skin tags are asymptomatic and do not require removal. Sometimes, they may be associated with symptoms, like:
- Itching
- Irritation
- Difficulty maintaining hygiene
- Inflammation (swelling)
- Pain
- Bleeding
If patients feel uncomfortable, underconfident, and insecure because of their anal skin tags, they might wish to have them removed.
When Should You Seek Medical Help?
If you have a large anal skin tag that is troublesome and has a current or prior anorectal condition, you could see your doctor and request a referral to your hospital for treatment on the NHS. Treating underlying conditions such as haemorrhoids, constipation, and anal fissures, along with the removal of the anal skin tag, can prevent its recurrence.
The NHS categorises skin tag (including anal skin tag) removal as a procedure of limited clinical benefit and does not fund their removal. We, at the Leicester Bowel Clinic, offer consultation and treatment packages to have them removed under a local or general anaesthetic. Our specialists will ensure that you feel comfortable discussing your problems and advise you of the risks and benefits of the procedure. There is no need to suffer in silence due to the embarrassment and taboo surrounding the topic.
What Causes an Anal Skin Tag?
Anal skin tags have various possible causes.
- Anal skin tags may occur as a consequence of other associated anorectal conditions, like haemorrhoids or anal fissures. Anal fissures are small damages or ruptures in the mucosal lining of the anus. During their healing process, they can trigger the growth of anal skin tags. If the patient has a history of haemorrhoids, the skin that stretches due to swelling near the anus does not get restored to its original state even after the haemorrhoids have healed. This leaves loose skin behind, forming a skin tag.
- Individuals diagnosed with certain conditions are at a higher risk of developing anal skin tags. For example, a significant percentage of those with Crohn’s disease have been found to develop anal skin tags, but treatment of these skin tags is more complicated.
- Other reasons include obesity, difficult childbirth, lifting heavy objects, constipation, and diarrhoea.
How is an Anal Skin Tag Diagnosed?
An in-depth discussion of your symptoms, worries, and medical history will take place during the consultation stage of the diagnosis process for an anal skin tag. Make sure to inform your doctor of any history of other bowel diseases or if you are experiencing any other symptoms.
The doctor will then examine the affected area. The diagnosis of skin tags is relatively simple because they are visible on the outside. Additionally, the physician will look for indications of related conditions, like anal fissures or haemorrhoids. This could include an internal examination known as a Digital Rectal Examination (DRE), in which anus abnormalities are checked by inserting a gloved, lubricated finger into the anus.
If the doctor suspects underlying medical conditions or if you belong to a high-risk group for other associated medical conditions, further testing may be required for diagnosis confirmation.
What are the Treatment Options for an Anal Skin Tag?
Anal skin tags usually do not go away by themselves. Their removal is simple and safe.
Anal skin tag removal involves cutting them away using electrosurgical equipment or surgically. It is usually performed under a local anaesthetic (most commonly after an injection to numb the area); however, general anaesthesia (in an operation theatre where you are put to sleep). may be administered if treatment also involves other underlying anorectal conditions. The wound is most often left open to heal. This is a short procedure with minimal pain and a relatively quick and easy recovery that can be performed in the outpatient clinic equipped with the necessary equipment.
If an underlying condition like haemorrhoids or anal fissures is responsible for the skin tag and requires treatment, this can be done in parallel with the anal skin tag treatment. We, at Leicester Bowel Clinic, offer services by surgeons with experience in these procedures.

Frequently Asked Questions
01. Do anal skin tags go away on their own?
Anal skin tags usually do not heal or fall off by themselves. They may not require removal if they are not causing any adverse effects. Non-surgical or surgical procedures can be used for anal skin tag removal.
02. How can I tell if it is a haemorrhoid or an anal skin tag?
Haemorrhoids can cause anal skin tags. Sometimes, prolapsed (sticking out of the anus) haemorrhoids and external haemorrhoids can be mistaken for skin tags. Skin tags are usually painless, do not bleed, and have the same colour as the surrounding skin. On the other hand, piles are usually painful, cause bleeding, and are red or purple in colour. It is advisable to have a medical evaluation in order to obtain a precise diagnosis.
