Mr Baljit Singh was appointed as a Consultant Colorectal Surgeon and Honorary Senior Lecturer at the University Hospitals Leicester in 2009. He qualified in medicine in 1992 from Oxford University having also obtained a first class honours degree in physiological sciences.
He undertook basic surgical training in Nottingham, Leicester and was a specialist registrar in the Oxford region. He was also appointed as a Clinical Lecturer in the Nuffield Department of Surgery, Oxford University where he also held the post of Surgeon-Scientist. Mr Singh has a strong academic background having been awarded a PhD (DPhil) from Oxford University in 2004. He was awarded a prestigious joint Royal College of Surgeons/MRC fellowship to study for his PhD.
This research interest has culminated in several projects both basic science and clinically based.
Mr Singh has been awarded several international prizes. These include poster of distinction at DDW, and the International Guest Scholar for the American College of Surgeons 2008. The latter is a highly competitive award given to only ten surgeons world wide each year. He was also awarded the European Society of Coloproctology Travelling Fellowship to Japan and spent time at the National Cancer Centre, Tokyo. Mr Singh has also had the opportunity to visit and learn surgical techniques including laparoscopic surgery in leading institutions in France, North America including Mayo Clinic and Cornell University. He has published over fifty peered reviewed papers including review articles and book chapters. Mr Singh has presented at both national and international meetings and continues to have an interest in both clinical and academic practice.
